What is asylum in immigration?

On Behalf of | Dec 5, 2018 | US Immigration Law |

One can hardly turn the news on these days without hearing about asylum. Every day, there is another story about immigrants who are wanting to seek asylum in the United States. There are many Miami residents who understand these immigrants struggle, while others may not even understand what asylum means.

Asylum is an immigration term that has become popular recently. The United States Citizenship and Immigration Services says that asylum is a status for those who are refugees and already in the United States because of a fear of persecution from the country they have left.

There are five reasons a person can seek asylum in the United States. The reasons are for persecution in their home countries due to race, religion, nationality, membership in a particular social group or political opinion. Those who are granted asylum have the right to live and work in the United States, file for their spouse and children to enter the United States, apply for citizenship and travel outside of the United States.

Seeking asylum can be a complicated process. An attorney who specializes in immigration can help their client with their asylum application and represent their interests. An attorney understands how important it is for their client to remain in the United States and to not have to go back to their home country, where they are unsafe. Asylum status is available to help people begin a new and better life in the U.S.

It can be hard for an immigrant to understand their rights. An attorney who understands immigration can help their client and their family with their immigration needs both now and into the future.
