Nursing home sued for resident's wrongful death

Families across Miami and Florida take elder care very seriously. It can be a difficult choice to move a loved one into the care of someone else, and families want to feel as though they are choosing a safe and secure facility. Too many times, however, nursing homes are negligent in their duty to protect their residents.

DHS extends Temporary Protected Status for Haitian earthquake refugees

The Department of Homeland Security is reportedly extending Temporary Protected Status for roughly 60,000 Haitians who were displaced by the January 2010 earthquake that devastated Haiti, according to a report in the Miami Herald. Federal officials are expected to publish notice of the extension this week in the Federal Register.

Congress extends EB-5 visa program for three more years

This blog has previously discussed the EB-5 investor's visa program. The immigration program was slated to expire at the end of this month. Congress is preparing to take a break until after the November election and time was beginning to run short.

Chronically ill kids at increased risk of medical errors

It can be devastating to be the parent of a child who suffers from a chronic health condition. There is the stress and anxiety of hospital visits and health problems, not to mention the difficulty of seeing a child in pain. As bad as this can be, one study suggests that these most vulnerable patients are the victims of medical malpractice more often than other children.

Car involved in Florida hit-and-run positively identified

Police are working through an investigation into a tragic hit-and-run accident that occurred earlier this year in March. The accident left two families devastated and searching for answers as to who was responsible for the car accident that left one 14-year-old girl injured and another 14-year-old girl dead.

U-visa cap reached under immigration law

Over the past year or so, this blog has discussed a variety of issues concerning deportation and removal proceedings in immigration court. The topic has arisen in the context of the administration's policy of prosecutorial discretion in deportation cases. The Secure Communities program has, at times, given local law enforcement agencies across the country pause as some local agencies said last year that the program could undermine police efforts to investigate alleged local crimes.

Florida students need not prove parent's legal status for in-state tuition

U.S. citizen students who are the children of undocumented immigrants living in Florida are denied equal protection of the law if they are forced to pay the higher out-of-state tuition rates, according to a recent ruling in federal court.

Several passengers injured in cruise ship accident

Getting hurt on a cruise can ruin an otherwise enjoyable trip. Passengers on cruises look forward to relaxing, eating and checking out all that the luxury ships are supposed to offer. When people go on a cruise, they don't expect to have to watch out for negligence or worry about mechanical errors.

Visa is option for some undocumented immigrants in foster care

Earlier this month, we discussed President Barack Obama exercising his executive authority by ordering the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals program. The DACA program will allow young immigrants who were brought into the country illegally by their parents to apply for a temporary deportation reprieve.
