Glomerular Diseases

Several different types of kidney disease are categorized as glomerular diseases.* The term glomerular comes from the part of the kidney called the glomerulus.* The glomerulus is a tiny cluster of cells that filter blood entering the kidney.*

Each kidney has approximately one million tiny glomeruli (plural of glomerulus) that are the main filtering system of the approximately one million nephrons within each kidney.** Because the glomeruli are so important to the kidneys' ability to filter blood effectively, any damage to the glomeruli can have an adverse effect on the proper functioning of the kidneys.**

Causal Factors for Glomerular Disease

There are several different types of glomerular diseases and several different causal factors for each type. Causes of glomerular disease include infections, disease, drugs, and accidents causing severe blood loss or physical trauma.*

Glomerulonephritis

Glomerulonephritis is a kidney disease characterized by inflammation of the glomeruli.* Glomerulonephritis hinders proper functioning of the kidney and can lead to total kidney failure.* Glomerulonephritis is sometimes referred to as glomerular nephritis (GN).**

Different Types of Glomerular Disease

Some of the different types of glomerular disease include:

  • IgA disease (Berger's nephropathy)
  • Minimal change GN
  • Focal segmental glomerulosclerosis (FSGS)
  • Membranous glomerulonephritis
  • Post-infectious GN
  • Rapidly progressive glomerulonephritis*
